“El zioba”: the name given to the weekly market of Chioggia in chioggian dialect, which is held every Thursday morning until 14:00 in the historic centre, along Corso del Popolo, from Porta S. Maria to Piazzetta Vigo.
Begun on June 17, 1852, it is still today one of the largest and best known markets in the whole of Veneto, as well as an integral part of chioggian tradition. A fixed appointment for both locals and tourists, especially during the summer season, where you can immerse yourself in food stands and colourful stalls of souvenirs, clothing, haberdashery, fruit and vegetables, flowers and plants.
Fishing is an activity of primary importance for the city of Chioggia and its inhabitants, typically of the entire Venetian lagoon, this ancient tradition has always been carried out with passion and dedication.
It is for this reason that the fish markets of Chioggia today represent not only a nerve centre for the daily trade of fresh fish at competitive prices, but also a characteristic and picturesque place, where hordes of tourists stop to taste the local delicacies.
